Opened: 1963 Closed: 1985 Why: The Fairfax County School Board, citing costs and declining enrollment.
First Graduating Class: Class of 1965 Last Graduating Class: Class of 1985 Fort Hunt High School merged with Groveton High School to form West Potomac High School using Groveton facilities, and combining the student bodies and staff of Groveton and Fort Hunt High Schools. Current: Fairfax county converted Fort Hunt to Sandburg Middle School.
Trivia:
- Unique in that a large number of the students walked to school.
- Planetarium completed in January of 1970. Modernized after the fire of 1978. The planetarium has a Spitz A4 planetarium projector and a 30-foot diameter dome. It has 76 seats, 54 permanent and 24 folding chairs, in a unidirectional pattern.
- Fire destroyed much of Fort Hunt High School in 1978.
