"Sandy" Winnefeld, FHHS 1974Vice Admiral "Jaws" Winnefeld

1974 Fort Hunt grad, (then) Lieutenant "Sandy" Winnefeld, played the part of a Top Gun instructor in the 1986 film, "Top Gun." He actually flew the Russian MiG against Tom Cruise's character, "Maverick." Unlike Tom Cruise, Admiral Winnefeld actually flew the aircraft---without puking, as Tom Cruise did during a back seat ride in an F-14-- and Winnefeld really was a red-hot aviator, something that Mr. Scientology can only pretend at. But then, Tom Cruise was not a mighty, mighty Federal. Not everyone can be.

You can find Vice Admiral James "Sandy" Winnefeld (call sign: "Jaws") on IMDb as one of the cast members.

Doing the Uniform Proud
written by Brenda Hughes , January 30, 2009
It's always so GREAT to read about outstanding achievers who serve in the military and make us all so proud of our soliders and their sacrifice for what we often take for granted. It's especially cool when someone blows the "doors" off celebrities like Tom Cruise who live in the limelight while people like this deserve the credit and proudly serve and wear the uniform and the glory so magnificantly. THANK YOU (and many of your fellow service men and women) FOR MAKING US SO PROUD and so fortunate!!!

As the proud daughter of a retired USAF fighter pilot (Col. John E. Buchanan), who flew phantom jets, my very own "Top Gun", I commend you and the rest of our unsung heroes. The day I saw Tom Cruise in Top Gun, was a day I will never forget as I sat in the theatre puffed with pride, knowning Tom was acting out my father's story, a true hero. My blessing goes out to all our military men, women and children who served so bravely...those that have gone before us and those in the midst of battle today. I am very proud to be an American and more so, a military brat! Sandy, I missed you by a few years at Fort Hunt. I was in the class of '67 and had to move away my senior year when my father was transferred to Alconbury, England where I graduated from Lakenheath High School. Best regards!
