Mr. Blake: 46 Year (+) of Teaching!
Tuesday, 18 November 2008

http://fhhs1977.org/images/stories/news/harryblake.jpgThe Fort Hunt High School band continues to be a wellspring of our community's pride.  Under the brilliant direction of Mr. Frank Wickes and Mr. Harry Blake, thousands of young Americans were inspired to accomplish wonderful things.  Our classmate, Stasia (Wolicki) Rhoads recently tracked down Mr. Blake. He responded as you would expect, with terrific warmth and strength: "There are no programs in the United States like the Fort Hunt Band Program of the 70s.  There are many good ones, but they could not stand up to those programs of Mr. Wickes in the early 70's and our good times in the middle of the 70's. I still have friends who cannot believe it is a high school band when they hear the recordings of Pines of Rome, Candide, Festive Overture, Children's March, etc....P.S. I still have a copy of Blake's Bloopers that was passed out on our trip to the National Bi-Centennial Contest in June of 1976. It brings back many pleasant memories. I still don't believe I made those comments."

An online news article dated 29 Oct 2008 announced that Mr. Blake was moving from high school to college. He is currently the director of Blinn College's program. You can click on his photo at that school's page, and email him. They say that a teacher's influence is like a pebble tossed in a pond; the teacher never gets to see the fruits of his/her teaching, but those ripples go on and on. What a great Christmas gift for Harry Blake if his former students let him know how those ripples he started continue. Mr. Blake and the Fort Hunt Majorettes!
written by Cindy Miller , November 18, 2008
How wonderful to hear about Mr. Blake. I was lucky enough to be on his Fort Hunt High School majorette squad (although I actually auditioned for Mr. Wicks) from 1972 - 1976 and was in the band when we won the Bicentennial Show and the Robinson Marching Spectacular and a lot of others. I think those of us in the band knew that this was a very special band and a very special director. I know there aren't many majorette squads that have the benefit (and the challenge) of the band director being a baton twirling champ as well! It was a wonderful time. I have long since misplaced the recordings that I had of the band. I would love to get a copy if anyone has them. I think there are only a few majorettes who can say they've twirled to "The Pines of Rome"!

I was very fortunate when my father was transferred from Virginia Beach to the Pentagon that we had seen the Fort Hunt Band perform at my VB high school the summer before we moved and he found a house to rent that let me attend Fort Hunt and be a part of the band my junior and senior year. I remember making fun of Mr. Blake and the crazy things that he said which now looking back I didn’t appreciate all the work that he put into the band to give us the opportunities we had. I played clarinet in the symphonic band and saxophone in marching band even though I had to stuff all my hair under my hat to march. I should have cut it off, but no, not in the mid 70’s. It was great fun playing Yakety Sax in the saxophone line while the rest of the band did the “guillotine” at the bicentennial competition. And Cindy, I still have copies of two records from that time. One was before I joined the band which was the Vienna, Austria trip with Mr. Wickes and the other was the compilation for the years 1974 – 1978 with Mr. Blake and Mr. Etheridge. On top of that I have a copy of the 1975 Kennedy Center recording and the 1975 band festival performances on reel-to-reel tape. My tape machine was stolen in college so the tapes have not been played in almost 30 years. I will need to see if I can get them transferred to digital format. Thanks to the class of 77 for maintaining this site. Bill Diehm ‘76 ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it )
